Julia Ducournau

2016

Horror

Flesh gnarling body-horror meets coming-of-age drama in French filmmaker Julia Ducournau’s breakout first feature film. When 17-year-old Justine, a strict vegetarian attempting to navigate her induction to veterinarian school, is forced to eat rabbit kidney as a part of a hazing ritual, her insatiable desire for meat is awoken and a dark journey of self-discovery begins.

Region B

RAW has been available on Blu-ray for many years but in spring 2021 Second Sight produced a bumper Limited Edition release of this bold and subversive film that has gone on to attain cult status. Packaged in a rigid case that includes art cards and a beautifully put-together booklet with exclusive essays by Hannah Strong (formerly Hannah Woodhead) and Emma Westwood, this is a very eye-catching piece of physical media.

In terms of the actual film’s presentation, this isn’t a 4k upgrade so you’re getting the same 1080p image quality as its original release in 2016, but that isn’t a notable deterrent for us – it’s the depth of special features that are the main area of interest. Julia Ducournau is especially heavily involved here, recording an entertaining audio commentary with film critic Emma Westwood and several interviews that provide good insights into her personality as a filmmaker and the themes that she wants to explore.

There’s an interesting panel discussion called Genre Matters from the Australian film festival Monster Fest from 2016 where a group of female genre directors, including Ducournau, discusses their relationship with genre filmmaking and, among other things, whether that labeling is a hindrance or help to their respective careers. The video essay by film critic Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, who also conducts one of the interviews with Ducournau, which looks at Justine and the different ways each member of her family deal with their genetic cannibalism, is probably one of our highlights from these extensive features on the disc.

After having the chance to see Titane earlier this year we’re now unashamedly Ducournau die-hards and if you feel at all the same way then this deluxe edition of her incredible debut is basically a must-have.
